Chris Viljoen is one of those individuals.

Chris Viljoen’s journey began in education shortly after completing school in the early 1990s. With a bursary in hand, he pursued a career in teaching and studied in Potchefstroom - a path that naturally aligned with who he was. But before he could fully step into that world, life introduced him to something that would shape him even further. He was enlisted in the military, serving as a lieutenant, where he was responsible for weapons training — specifically platoon weapon training. It was a demanding environment, one that required discipline, clarity, and absolute accountability. In that space, there was no room for misunderstanding.

What he taught… had to be understood.

After completing his military service, Chris stepped into his role as a teacher at Laerskool Kollegepark, where he spent several years educating young minds. He would later reflect that he has spent the majority of his life in the Vaal Triangle - a region that would become deeply intertwined with his journey. In the late 1990s, Chris ventured into entrepreneurship, starting a business called Framing Factory, where he produced frames for portraits and paintings. It was something he genuinely enjoyed - something he was passionate about.

And listening to Chris speak about this chapter of his life is something that leaves an impression.

Chris transitioned into the field as a safety trainer, where he spent several years building up experience, understanding people, and learning how safety truly functions in real environments. He was later approached by IRCA South Africa, where he moved into a professional auditing role. For more than six years, he focused on behaviour-based safety and safety auditing, gaining extensive experience across industries. He travelled across South Africa, conducting training and audits - working with businesses in real conditions, under real pressure.

Over the years, Chris has conducted hundreds of safety audits, worked with countless companies, and built deep expertise through both NOSA and IRCA frameworks. Beyond South Africa, he has also operated as an international auditor, taking his expertise across borders.

This is not surface-level knowledge. This is decades of lived experience-understanding how systems work, where they fail, and how people respond within them. Driven by a growing passion for safety, auditing, and training, Chris reached a point where he knew he had to build something of his own. He founded a company initially known as Effective Safety Solutions, which later evolved into what we know today as Safe Skill Pty Ltd.

What stands out most is not just the business itself, but the journey behind it - the highs, the lows, and the challenges faced along the way. You can hear it when he speaks. That raw, genuine passion, that excitement, that belief in what he has built. Because for Chris, this was never just about business. It was about building something that matters.
